Read http://brandonlive.com/2008/03/29/remote-search-in-windows-search-40/ but it does not mention whether WS 4 is required on the remote computer to be indexed and what the addin for shared folders does.

Hey this guide here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772446(WS.10).aspx mentions Remote query support in Windows Vista for querying a remote computer running any supported OS if WS 4.0 is installed. Does Windows 7 also support this (my guess is obviously yes) but this means Windows Search 4 should be installed on XP computer as well for me to query it from a PC running Windows 7? Why can't Windows 7 query the remote computer which does not have Windows Search installed? Also, what then does the WDS Addin for Microsoft Networks do then and why is not supported on Windows 7 as per KB918996? When will a Windows 7 compatible version be available? Can you clarify all these in a blog post?

Thanks for the thoughtful comments, Brandon.

Actually the term "Millennials" is used by the author of the ThinkWeek paper (who is one of you/them). I just used it because he did.

Like I said in my post, I have learned a lot from my younger blogging colleagues and I hope they've learned something from me. Mary Jo Foley
