Some big news out of Mix07 today. Silverlight itself had been announced a week or two ago. Now they’ve gone and announced the next version of it already (Silverlight 1.1) which will includes the CLR for the Mac (and possibly other platforms? Or perhaps they’ll come later). This is pretty huge, and I wonder what it will mean for projects like Mono. A new beta of Silverlight 1.0 was made available, as well as the Mac-CLR-supporting 1.1 alpha build. Release notes for both are here.
Another interesting announcement is that Windows Live will be offering a new serivce which reportedly offers 4GB of storage to Silverlight developers to host applications and media (videos, etc). Joshua Allen’s post seems to suggest that this is a Windows Live Platform initiative. That could be big, and I can’t wait to see how it comes together.

Last week, Dane Glasgow announced that he was leaving Microsoft. Recently, Dane has been the General Manager for the Live Search team. I first met Dane at the Search Champs “v2″ event back in April of 2005, around the time that Desktop Search was first released at Microsoft. We were treated to a dinner hosted by MSN, and Dane was one of three that evening to suggest that I send in a resume. A few shorts months later, and I joined the WDS team, which fell under Dane’s pervue at the time. Having worked (indirectly) for Dane for over a year, I can say with great confidence that Microsoft is losing one of its finest.
Dane’s “official” farewell party was on Thursday, and included the presentation of a custom-embroidered T-shirt that dozens who’d had the pleasure to work with Dane signed beforehand. Of course, a few stragglers had a bit more of a challenge scribbling their autographs…

It was great working with you Dane. Best of luck “out there.”
Writer is a new blogging tool from Windows Live. It lets you publish posts, pictures, maps, and more on all kinds of blogging services.
I just downloaded their beta and I’m posting this entry from it now. Pretty sweet app!
Screenshots, info, and download at their blog.
Check it out!
First up, I made a couple of posts this week to our FindMyStuff Team Blog. The second of which is about our support for searching over sources that output OpenSearch RSS. Check it out.
Second, I’m about to head off to Gnomedex 6.0. I’m running on less sleep than planned, so caffiene will have to get me through the day. Hopefully I’ll get online during the event, but no promises.
Alright, here’s the real scoop: That site redirects to www.msreadr.com - a site (plus RSS feed) that aggregates a whole bunch of Windows Live blogs!
Today we made our first public announcement about the project I’m currently working on. It’s a Windows Live Search client application, currently without any finalized branding.
And we have a blog! - It’s pretty basic right now. Expect to see a lot more about our team and what we’re doing very soon.
The announcement came this morning as Dane Glasgow demoed the application during Bill Gates’ keynote presentation at the annual CEO Summit.
Many on our team spent long hours working to get ready for the demo and we’re happy that it went very well. We have gotten a lot of bad press about the name (or lack thereof), and a lot of people not understanding our goals. But hopefully that will change with time. I think when our beta release gets out to the public things will start to make a lot more sense!
Looks like those crazy Live Search people snuck out another update! The goofy scrollbar is gone (it now works like the Image Search one), and you can now create and edit Search Macros!
I’ve already made a couple:
Brandon.MSDN - searches just MSDN and MSDN2
Brandon.WinDev - searches MSDN, CodeProject, GotDotNet, OdeToCode, and some others.
By clicking on one of those and installing the macro, you’ll get them added to your search bar on Live.com - then you can refine you search to just those sites with the click of a button!
New Live.com! - New UI! New First-run experience! New Gadgets! Multiple pages/tabs! FASTER!
New Live Search! - Infinite scrolling (no paging!), adjustable detail level, Search-within-site, and the best image search ever.
Onfolio acquisition and beta of the Windows Live Toolbar! (available tomorrow)
The new Live.com site is in the process of coming online, and might be slower than usual as they ramp up the servers. By morning it should be snappier than ever.
This is just the beginning… There’s a lot more to come from Windows Live!
I’ll be posting more tomorrow. Right now, I need sleep!
Recently a new tech news/blog site has popped by the name of LiveSide. They’ve been getting all kinds of scoops about upcoming Windows Live services. It appears their goal it to track everything that’s happening with Windows/Office/Xbox Live.
Check them out at www.liveside.net
It currently only supports the Seattle and San Francisco areas, but damned if it’s not cool.

Interesting preview of what mapping sites could do in the future.
